Born late in the 12th century, the eldest son of Pietro de Bernardone, one of Assisi's wealthiest merchants, St. Francis spent his early years in unrestrained youthful extravagance. After experiencing a vision of Christ, however, young Francis attracted many followers and remains today one of the faith's most beloved and inspiring figures.
