"Corpus Christi"

Corpus Christi

Jean Pascal Norest,
art- teacher of the eldest son of Napoleon III, (Dieppe 1822-1870)
carved ivory
15" x 9"
France 1800's

Early Christians were reluctant to portray the crucifixion, a type of execution reserved for the lowest sort of criminal. The crucifixion had negative connotations, including defeat and humiliation. Even after Constantine abolished crucifixion and stressed that the cross was a symbol of pride and triumph, it was more than a century before it appeared in Christian art.
