The original triptych panel, by the 17th century's foremost Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, hangs in Antwerp's Vrouwe Cathedral. Composed in powerful, sweeping curves that lead the viewer's eye toward the center- - where tension is focused on the figure of Christ, slumped pitifully into the arms of His followers- - Willink's Decent illuminates the work's remarkable unity and organization.
