"The Crucifixion of Christ"

Christ's sacrifice on the cross brought about the redemption of humanity from the original sin of Adam, whose sin brought death to the world. Thus, the skull at the base of the cross is understood to be that of Adam - and also a reference to Golgotha, the place of a skull, where the crucifixion occurred. Legend suggests that Golgotha is also the burial place of Adam.
